December 2008 Web Devotionals
Where are you, Christmas?
Christmas.
One word. Two syllables. 9 letters. Yet within this
uncomplicated word lies the power of eternity. It's
a word of great celebration and of holy anticipation.
For others, the word - "Christmas"
- holds painful memories of childhood hopes and dreams
that were dashed against the stony wall of reality.
Perhaps when you turn your calendar from November
to December - you turn it with dread and melancholy.
You might wish that you could rip the entire month
of December off the calendar of your life. How can
an event that was meant to bring "joy to the world"
also be the instigator of so much grit and grief?
Let me assure you that God cares deeply
about how you celebrate Christmas. Christmas really
is the best thing that ever could have happened to
you. There is still the possibility that an angel
somewhere is warming up his vocal chords to sing
a song of joy into your melancholy world.
Christmas
causes traffic jams on city streets...and traffic
jams of relationships in our hearts. Christmas is
a time of wonder and awe...we wonder where the money
will come from and we are in awe of our credit card
bills! Christmas is hard to miss...it's everywhere!
If there is one thing that I know about
Christmas...it is this: Christmas is the best gift
that you will ever receive. Christmas transforms
a dark, cold hillside into a place where stars explode
and angels sing. Christmas transforms a barnyard
into a palace and an uneducated shepherd into a man
of significance and destiny.
As you contemplate your
heart attitude toward this season of holly and mistletoe,
remember that sometimes the best presents don't come
wrapped in Hallmark paper and tied with a designer
bow. Sometimes - the best gifts - are presented amidst
dread and disappointment. Now that's something to
celebrate! "And behold, I bring you good news of
great joy which shall be to all people. For unto
you is born this day in the City of David, a Savior,
Who is Christ the Lord." Luke 2:10 & 11
